The first few days of him being gone are always the hardest and then we start to get into a routine and things get a little easier. We were able to go have dinner with him tonight and spend some time which was really nice. After the 10 day lockdown he will be working and having briefings on a daily basis, but he'll be able to come home at night. Yay! I found out tonight he may also have some time off before they leave to go to Washington on the 24th or 25th, still not sure what day exactly.
The kids are handling things fairly well. We were pretty busy with the last week of school stuff, Ammon having his tonsils out, and Preston having tubes put in his ears over the past few weeks so I think they were too busy to really think about Glen leaving, but now with summer vacation we'll see how things go. Preston seems to be having the hardest time. He woke up in the middle of the night as usual a few nights ago and I brought him into my room, but then he woke up again about an hour later and looked over to where Glen normally is and said "Daddy?" Then he crawled out of the bed and ran down the hall calling, "Daddy!? Daddy!? Daddy!?" It was enough to make my heart break. I finally calmed him down and got him back to sleep, but he definitely misses Glen. He's kindof a momma's boy, but if Glen is around, that's who he wants. Isaac has been acting out a little, but I'm not sure if it's Glen being gone or something else. Over all things are a little tough, but going okay.

The Benefits of Facebook

My morning routine consists of getting breakfast for the kids and while the oatmeal/pancakes/eggs are cooking I flip open my trusty Mac and open up my e-mail. Ugh, junk. That's mostly what I get from e-mail now and it almost makes me wonder why I even check it on a daily basis. Of course if I didn't, the junk would pile up so much that it would overwhelm even the hint of a good e-mail and I'd be sure to scrap the whole thing and miss something important. However, now I have another vice to check up on - Facebook. My purpose with Facebook is mostly to see how other people's lives are way more interesting than mine . . . most of the time. I have to admit, I hate invites to Farmland, Flowerland, Heartland, and whatever other fluff there is on Facebook. Not to hurt anyone's feelings, but I ignore them all, hope you don't mind.
I'm not the type to keep so up to date on Facebook that I post something every day or all day long. If it's 10:30, 11:00 at night I figure most people are going to bed and don't care if I tell them that I am going to bed too. However, I love to get a good laugh and Facebook can occasionally be full of them. It's fun to hear the quirky things that people are doing and that their kids are doing. I'm a sucker for funny kid stories. The thing I like best about Facebook? I love finding old friends! People's names will pop in my head and I'll think, I wonder where they are now. I know! I'll see if I can find them on Facebook. I have found mission buddies, college roommates, High School friends and more. It's great. I recently got back in contact with my best friend from when I was eleven and living in England. It's crazy and fun to see where people I was so close to at one point have ended up and oddly look like they have barely aged. I also found my best friend from the 7th, 8th, and 9th grade. It has made my day being able to keep in contact with people I thought I would never talk to again.
I think life is about relationships. Those we have with our family, but also those we have with friends and acquaintances and the way those people can touch and enrich our lives make everything worth it.

St. George Trip

A while back we decided that it would be a lot of fun to plan an adult weekend getaway to St. George. We booked the timeshare and invited a few of our friends for a kids free weekend. We decided to go over UEA weekend and luckily my parents and one of my friends were able to take care of our kids. It was a lot of fun and a much needed break from real life. It was nice to feel like an adult again and have normal conversations. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy talking to Ammon about Thomas the train engine, spelling things for Ella, helping Isaac with his homework, and holding Preston non-stop, but I was ready for a little break. We headed north on Thursday, October 15th to drop off the kids, pick up Rob and Kendra Johnstun, who were dropping of their kids, and make a not so quick stop at the bank to get new debit cards. Then we were on our way. We met up with the rest of our group, Scott and Marci Taylor, Greg and Stephanie Whitney, Gene and Lori Smith, and Jacob and Anna Fechter in St. George that night at the timeshare.
Friday morning, a group of us went to the St. George temple to do sealings and it was really neat. It is a beautiful temple and the workers were so sweet. Glen's great-great-grandpa did a lot of the woodwork in the temple and it was special to be able to be there. Later some of the guys went to Mesquite to go golfing and the girls went shopping. Shopping without kids . . . incredible. That night we BBQ'd steaks and hung out together.
Saturday morning I went running with Anna on some of the bike paths and it was great. What a beautiful part of the state! The girls went for pedicures while some of the guys went on a bike ride and then we all met up for lunch. After that we split up to do some more shopping and just to relax. We made it back just in time for the BYU football game. That night Glen and I went with Anna and Jacob to Tuacahn to see Aida and everyone else went to the movies and then bowling. The play was amazing and despite all his complaining, I think Glen actually enjoyed it.
Sunday we headed home and even though it was nice to be away, I was happy to see our kids again. I really do miss them when I'm not around them.

St. George Temple on an absolutely gorgeous day.

Lunch at Texas Roadhouse.

Inside the timeshare. The day before school started we went to the school and found out his teacher would be Mrs. Jackson. However, when we went to his new classroom which is in one of the portables, we found Mrs. Martin. Mrs. Jackson had just had a baby and would be on maternity leave for six weeks. I was a little worried because in the 1st grade Isaac's teacher, Mrs. Dunkin left to have a baby at the Christmas break and decided not to come back. Isaac's second 1st grade teacher, Mrs. Boyd was great, but Isaac never really got over having a different teacher. Mrs. Martin seemed really great though and Isaac was excited when he found out that his best friend, Wade, was in his class.

The weather was great and Isaac was ready to ride his bike to school.
Outside of Isaac's new classroom.
Isaac and Ella in front of the school.

Ella started Kindergarten on August 27th and she was very excited. I think I was more nervous to send her to school than I was Isaac, but maybe that's because she's my only girl. She wasn't nervous at all. We went the week before to meet her new teacher, Mrs. Spaulding and Ella did an evaluation with her. She was right up to speed and she was in the same classroom Isaac had been in as a Kindergartner. Incidentally, Ella's teacher is also expecting a baby. I guess it comes with the territory of all these young teachers.

Ella with Mrs. Spaulding.

So far the year has been going really well. Mrs. Jackson came back and Isaac is doing really well with her. I suppose I could blame it on my husband, but it's not always his fault. Other projects begin to take precedence, life gets crazy, kids get in the way. Whatever the reason, things remain undone. We started painting the house about a year and a half ago and the kids bathroom, my bedroom, and my bathroom have yet to be finished. The problem is now the other rooms all need to be touched up as well. In February we started another large project, the floors. We had carpet in the dining room and it just wasn't working with four small children (can't imagine why). For a couple of years I had been wanting to take it all out and put down laminate flooring and we finally did it. Well, Glen did it and he did a great job, but like most projects, it remains slightly undone. It's just the baseboards and the transition strips, but I look forward to the day when a project is done completely. Though not finished, I absolutely love the floors and we put them in just in time. Preston now feeds himself and one-third of his food always ends up on the floor. It was interesting teaching piano lessons in the entryway while the floors were being worked on, but I managed. Here are some slightly unfinished pictures and hopefully some day soon I can put a completely finished picture. Of course there are still the curtains I need to get, the accessories, the . . .

The before picture. This summer was too short and crazy, but I'm actually glad that school is back in. I feel like I'm better organized when the kids are in school and consequently I have more free time rather than less. Weird. By the way this post is especially dedicated to my darling cousin Cara who keeps reminding me what a slacker I am. Hee hee, thanks Cara. OK, so here's a quick update because I have the Kindergarten carpool today and it's early day out. Glen is alive! This may sound weird, but he has been pretty sick lately and it's been quite the medical mystery. After multiple cat scans, ultra-sounds, a colonoscopy (fun!), an endoscopy, and lots of blood tests, they think there's something going on with his gallbladder, but it's going to stay in for the time being.
I'm back with all my piano students, plus some new ones. I'm up to 15 now and I'm hoping I can manage. With two little ones at home still and all the running around that accompanies kids in school, soccer, and dance, I stay very busy. I do find some time to read, play the piano, and hang out with friends and Glen which is nice. I have a new friend from Chile and I've been able to dust off my Spanish and surprisingly it's not quite as bad as I thought!
Isaac is in the second grade and loving school again. He still loves playing with friends more than school and homework is just not fun, but he's doing well. He continues to be an amazing reader and speller.
Ella started Kindergarten and she loves it! She loves drawing, coloring, and playing with new friends. She loves writing her whole name and other random letters that she likes. She's still in dance and says that dancing all day is her favorite thing to do.
Ammon is a little lonely with Isaac and Ella in school, but he tries to play with Preston. His trains are his ultimate toy and we have train tracks going down the hall on a daily basis. He is still very forceful and energetic and yet very sweet too.
Preston is getting bigger, although he is definitely our smallest kid. I think he might have hit 20 pounds finally at 13 1/2 months. He has quite the little personality and loves to make people laugh. His big brown eyes draw the attention of many strangers and I think he really likes the attention.
Check out our latest pictures! These are in no particular order.

On a fun scavenger hunt with some of our friends.

Ammon coloring in the tent at the Hardy Family reunion.

Isaac looking very handsome in his new suit.

Ella's first day of school.

A Daddy and kids sandwich!

Little Preston who just loves to have his picture taken.

Preston again, playing on the couch.

Ella's first day of school.

Isaac's first day of school, which was actually a week before Ella's. However, today the washer is broken and so I can't do laundry which means I have a couple extra minutes. Actually I should really be showering since it's 11:01 and I'm still in my pajamas, but oh well. I'll give some quick updates and then plug in some pictures.
Glen - has been a little under the weather and he's also trying to lose weight before April 1st or he's out of a job. We're not too worried because they really need him, but it's always a little scary. His job has been fine. He took off almost the whole month of December which was nice, but I'm sure he and I both wish he could have gotten more things done around the house. The projects just keep piling up, but it's hard to do things when the kids want to spend time with him. Now we're back to the feast and famine. When he's teaching, he leaves before we wake up and sometimes doesn't get home until after the kids are asleep, then he'll have like four days off in a row. We've learned to adjust pretty well.
Me - Still as busy as ever with kids and piano lessons. I set a goal to read 20,000 pages last year and I didn't reach the goal, but I still managed to read over 12,000 so I felt great. I really missed reading and it got me back in the habit. One of these days I'll list my favorites for suggestions. The holidays were great and once again Glen surprised me with a gift that was not in the budget, but he'll figure out how to pay for it (anyone want to buy a gun?). He bought me a new Mac laptop and it has been nice to be able to check things on the Internet in the kitchen where I can keep an eye on the kids. You would think I would have been able to blog more too, but I still have to keep my sessions on the Internet quick.
Isaac - Continues to love school. His teacher decided not to come back after she had a baby over the Christmas break so he came back to a new teacher, but after a few kinks, I think things are going well. He continues to be more independent every day and loves to go play with friends. He walks home from school with a couple other kids and although he takes a lot longer coming home, I think he really enjoys the freedom. He's lost two teeth so far and thinks it is just the coolest thing.
Ella - Oh, our little princess! She had a blast at her dance recital and cracked us up as she ran from one side of the stage to the other. We think she stole the show during her number. Glen cut her hair a week or so before her recital and even though I thought he was just going to trim it, he asked her how she wanted her hair and she said like Snow White. Two seconds later she said Sleeping Beauty instead, but the damage had already been done and Glen had chopped it into a bob. It looked very cute, but Ella was extremely upset. I assured her that it would grow back and we wouldn't cut it short again so she could look like Hannah Montana (her other favorite). Well, the day after her dance recital we went to some friends house for dinner and their son came running up from the basement to tell us that Ella had cut her hair. "Yes, we know." "No, Ella cut her hair!" I'm sure all you parents can understand the panic that set in as we stood in shock wondering how bad it was. She came upstairs and her bangs were gone . . . gone. "Don't worry, Mom, it will grow back.", Ella calmly told me. From the mouth of babes. It is finally starting to grow back and one day we'll look back and laugh, but needless to say I haven't wanted to do family pictures so Christmas cards are going to be really late . . . maybe they'll be Easter cards.
Ammon - Loves his baby brother Preston, maybe a little too much. I am constantly dragging him off of Preston as he loves to lay on top of him or gets right up in his face. He is still a bit of a bully and watch out when he pulls out one of his push toys. Isaac and Ella run screaming from him all the time, despite the fact that they're bigger than him. He is also the biggest sweetheart. I think we named him appropriately because of any of my children if he were told to protect some one's sheep he would definitely chop off some people's arms and then teach about Christ. He'll be a great missionary. He loves to talk and he gets better every day.
Preston - Just keeps getting bigger and cuter. He loves to puff through his nose and thinks it's hilarious. He had some ear infections and that kid does not like medicine. The minute I would even take it out he would purse up his little lips and refuse to open his mouth. He loves his siblings and his Dad so much. He lights up when Glen comes home. He still wants to be held 85% of the day which makes things interesting, but he's also figured out how to drag himself around on the floor. It's not quite the army crawl and it takes a great deal of effort, but if he sees a toy he can usually pull himself over to it. He's rolling over everywhere too, but still not sitting up on his own. Of course if he did sit up, Ammon would probably knock him over. He also likes to say Dadadada and can squeal and shrieks louder than all the kids combined.
Overall we're doing well and looking forward to warmer weather. First lost tooth!
Cute with bangs!

Our solution to no bangs.
  My happy boy!

Preston's Baby Blessing

Having a baby makes you realize just how precious and wonderful life is. Having a fourth child has really blown my world out of whack. I feel like I am always behind and running to catch up. Preston is now three months old and I am finally feeling like I'm getting a handle on things, most days that is. For the first 2 1/2 months of his life Preston wanted to be held non-stop and since he's so cute, how could I refuse? Unfortunately, it meant little to no sleep for me and my house in utter chaos. It is a good thing I love my kids so much.
Isaac is loving the 1st grade and doing really well. They tested his reading and they can't test him as high as he can actually read (whatever that means), but I'm glad he's doing well. He has been much more social and gets mad when he can't play with friends everyday for hours.
Ella is still our little blond princess. She is actually very smart and can write almost all of her letters and she recognizes them all, but boy does she play the "dumb blond" part to a tee. Where does she get that? Hee Hee.
Ammon is so full of life it's infectious. He is the most boisterous kid I have ever met. He loves his baby brother and Preston just loves him back. I just need to teach Ammon that squeezing Preston till he squawks is not a good thing.
Preston is such a happy kid. He loves to smile and laugh and does it whenever anyone gives him attention. He has been rolling over from his back to his stomach, but not on a regular basis. I want to slow him down, but I know I'm going to blink one day and he'll be walking. Why does it happen so quick?!
Glen is still teaching an MI course at Camp Williams and he's great at it. He misses jumping out of planes with the 19th, but I don't miss him doing it.
I have recently started running on a treadmill to get rid of this baby weight and I actually enjoy it. I'm crazy I know, but it has given me more energy during the day to chase after kids.
Well, there's the quick update on us. I would have loved to put pictures, but we recently realized our 4 year old computer only has 80 gigs of storage and we were running out, so Glen took all the pictures off.
Uh-oh, Preston is awake so I'm off.

Cleats and Leotards

I am officially a soccer mom. After convincing Glen it was, we called my mom and told her to pack her bags. My friend Kendra came over and helped get the kids ready for church and as my mom and the kids headed off in one direction we headed another towards the hospital.

We may have jumped the gun a little because when we got to the hospital, the contractions all but stopped. I guess I was a little overly concerned about having the baby in the car. The choice was to go home or break my water and get things going. Because I was already 6 days late we opted to keep things going. Things still didn't progress very quickly, but finally after what I called my hardest labor and Glen called my easiest (how could he possibly know?) Preston was born at 6:41 pm.

The stats:

Preston Michael Black

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

7 lb 7 oz

19 1/2 in

He looks a lot like Isaac did as a baby so now we're half and half for family likeness. The kids were all very excited and all the worries about how Ammon would act have disappeared. He wants to hold him and take care of him more than Isaac and Ella. Isaac is being a great big brother and when he talks or sings to him, Preston quiets down really well. Ella loves him, but I think it's just one more brother to her. She is not really the motherly type yet. We feel extremely blessed to have him in our family and though I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed, things are falling into place pretty well. If I could just get Preston to go to sleep before 2 or 3 in the morning it would be great. Check out the pictures my dad took at the hospital, there will be more to come soon.

Here's a couple from home 5 days old.

Family Vacation Part III

Since the baby hasn't come yet (yes, I am 2 days past my due date, but I still feel pretty good) I figured I should finish up our family vacation. Disneyland was great, but I think everyone was happy to spend a day up in Big Bear on Saturday relaxing. Glen and I took the kids to visit his long time friends, the Mandolini's. We had a yummy lunch and really enjoyed chatting while the kids played.

After the visit we rushed back to the time share to surprise Jenny (Bill's wife) with a birthday cake and mini party. Then Glen and I got ready to head back down the mountain to Victorville. I was glad the kids didn't have to make the trip again and I'm sure they were too. We stopped by a wedding reception for a family Glen knew years ago and then it was off to his 20 year class reunion. As soon as we got inside, Glen's friend Lori Preston spotted us and came over to give us big hugs. The baby is actually being named after her and a couple of Glen's other friends from high school (Preston Michael). Lori, in my opinion hasn't changed a bit since high school except maybe a better hair style. She still looks great. Glen was probably one of the most changed. People kept giving him weird looks and when their curiosity would finally get the better of them they would come over and gasp at Glen's high school picture on his name tag. "Glen Black! No way!" Yep, a few pounds more and a few hairs less, but the same guy. There weren't a lot of people there, but it was interesting to meet some of the people that Glen had grown up with. It makes me wonder who will show up to my 20 year reunion and what they'll look like. Of course, after 20 years some things never change. The cheerleaders were still clumped together in a group on the dance floor, the quiet folks stayed mostly at their tables, and the guy who said he'd be successful really is.

It was back up the mountain to find the kids were just fine and Grandma didn't have too much trouble with them. Sunday we went to the ward in Big Bear along with quite a few other vacationing families and then it was time to pack up and head out. Grandma, Grandpa, Mike, Brittany, Bill, Jenny, and Grace all headed back to Utah and we made our way back to Victorville for a picnic and get together at the Mojave Narrows park with more of Glen's friends from High School. We all got a kick out of the camels at the park and the crazy wind reminded us of being back home in Eagle Mountain.

We stopped for a quick visit at Glen's friend, Travis's house, and then we were off to San Diego. We checked in to the time share and after Glen made a great dinner, we were all plenty eager to get some rest. Monday we decided to go into phase two of the vacation - relax more than run around. I hung out in the condo while Ammon took a very long and very needed nap and Glen took Isaac and Ella to the pool. We decided after lunch to go to the San Diego Zoo and it was a lot of fun. It was only five minutes from the time share which was just perfect. The kids loved seeing all the animals and we enjoyed not being rushed, just taking our time and seeing what we wanted. The San Diego zoo is beautifully done and all the shade made it very nice and cool. The coolest part for me, seeing some of the last panda's in the world, very cute. Isaac liked the hyena, which was staring at us like we were lunch. The hippos in the water were absolutely fascinating as they glided around without a care in the world.

Tuesday we went to Sea World and again had a lot of fun. We enjoyed seeing the penguins, the sea lions, the dolphin show, and many other things, but our favorite thing by far and completely worth the money was our lunch with Shamu. We reserved our places as soon as we got in the park and we were excited to see exactly what it entailed. It was fabulous to say the least. They had tables set up on a covered patio right next to the killer whale's "play pool". This is where they go after they do their shows and they are allowed to do whatever they want. While they were swimming in, we loaded up from an incredible buffet. There were seafood dishes, pasta, soup, chicken, kid friendly food, salad, fruit, and delicious desserts. Then as we ate the trainers helped show us where the whales were going to "pose" for pictures. The only rule was that since this was the whales play time, there was no guarantee they wouldn't splash us and those on the bottom tier were in a complete soak zone. We were fine, but you could tell the whales were having a great time as they flipped and jumped and spun for us. The kids loved it and even after we left the lunch we went down to watch the whales some more from the viewing area where you could see them under the water. It was truly amazing to see these huge creatures be so graceful in the water. As Isaac puts it, we had a great time at Sea World.

Wednesday we went to the beach for the morning. Isaac and Ella loved playing in the water, but Ammon preferred playing in the sand. Then we were on the road again and headed to Arizona. We made it into Scottsdale at about dinner time and stayed at Glen's friend, Mike's house. Glen and Mike were able to go play tennis the next the morning and the kids played in a little pool we bought. We relaxed and slept and that night we all went out to dinner. Friday morning we headed out early to finally go home to Utah. I was so excited to be back in Utah I could have kissed the ground. It's always a great feeling to come home. Even with some longer stops along the way, we made good time and were back home in Eagle Mountain by bedtime.

Our next big family vacation may not happen for a few years, but this trip left us with plenty of great memories to last until then.

Family Vacation - Part 2

Hindsight is 20/20 and we definitely learned some things from this trip. As I mentioned, we stayed up in Big Bear, California which is a beautiful town up in the mountains and a great place to visit, if you're going to stay there. Besides having the timeshare there and the one in Anaheim being booked, we felt like it was a good option because we would be going down to Anaheim two days, but then we would be going down to Victorville and the Apple Valley area the next two days, which is just about 45 minutes down the other side of the mountain. In theory it works, but after a long day at Disneyland, it was not an enjoyable trip back up the mountain. The kids fell asleep in the car pretty quickly, but every time we made a stop (which with as tired as Glen was, we had to do a few times) the kids woke up. Ella and Ammon fed off of each other's misery and cried most of the way back.

Friday morning we headed back down the mountain to go to Disneyland again and this time the trip proved too much for Ammon. Glen says that every time we go on a vacation one of our kids has to throw up in the car and this time it was Ammon. Luckily this is one thing we have learned from the past and I was ready with a tub and was able to catch most of it. We also had a couple two liter bottles of water and plenty of paper towels, so clean up wasn't that bad except for being on the side of a busy California freeway. Skip to the end of the day and I was not looking forward to the drive back up the mountain, it went better, but the big thing we learned; if you're going to Disneyland, stay in a hotel close to Disneyland, period.

Our second day at Disneyland went quite differently from the first and I have to say I enjoyed it a lot more. We knew exactly where we wanted to go and with help from cousin Julie, who met us there, it was less chaotic than the day before. Not to mention that I didn't allow any bathroom incidents to foul us up. Because Ella and Ammon had to wait for a couple hours the night before while Isaac rode some big rides, we headed to Fantasy Land first. We happened across some Princesses as we first got into the park, but Ella wasn't giving in completely and wasn't too excited about having her picture taken with Sleeping Beauty. My daughter is a nut. Luckily she had a great time on the carousel, Dumbo, the train, and Peter Pan. Isaac also had fun although after the excitement of Space Mountain, he was a little bored. He and Glen were the only ones to brave the teacups which was fun to watch. Ammon had warmed up considerably to the idea of Disneyland and was pretty good about getting onto most rides, except for Dumbo. He kept pointing at the Dumbo's while we were in line and saying, "No fly, no fly." I was a little nervous, but I thought he'd be ok. Boy was I wrong. It was a total struggle to get him strapped in with me and though I should have opted out at that point, I thought he'd be excited once the ride started. Wrong. He screamed the whole time. "Yes, look at me, the big pregnant woman forcing her toddler onto a ride he doesn't like." Wave, wave.

We also figured out a trick to avoid buying so much food in the park, which yes is really expensive. We ate a late breakfast outside of the park, brought lots of healthy snacks to get us through to a late lunch in the park and then we did buy one snack later in the day in the park, the pineapple whips from outside the Tiki Room which weren't too expensive and soooo good. Dinner was at Mimi's Cafe after we left the park and met up with the rest of the family who we hadn't seen much.

We did allow the second day to be the shopping day and while Isaac checked out the knight store with Glen, I took Ella to the Princess store. She immediately raced to the beautiful yellow Belle dress, that ironically her cousin Grace had bought earlier that day, and refused to look at anything else. It took a great deal of prodding and explaining that she only had $20.00 to spend and the dress was too much, but I managed to avoid a total meltdown and she finally settled on a bracelet, some rings, a coloring book, and princess twist crayons. Phew. Isaac and Ammon ended up with guns from the Buzz Lightyear store after we rode that again. (this was Ella's favorite ride). And we were able to make a quick stop over at California adventure just to go on Monsters Inc. The other thing we learned, plan for three days at Disneyland, two really isn't enough. Though we were able to ride quite a few things and see a lot, there was more we would have liked to see and do. Now we can say we have done the Disneyland thing and our kids will have to wait until they are all bigger (we figure the youngest needs to be at least six or seven) until we go again.

Glen and Isaac on the TeacupsOn the train, in the monkey cage, how appropriate.Ammon with his favorite toy of the day, the water bottle we brought, he enjoyed spraying all of us and everyone else in the park with it.Ella finally being our little princess and posing for pictures.Cousin Julie and the gang at California Adventure.

More pictures to come when I get them from Glen's camera.

The Vacation - Part 1

After four years of deployments, babies, and work we finally decided it was time to take a nice family vacation. Glen had a 20 year class reunion in California and we decided it would be a perfect time to make it into a nice big trip including Disneyland, San Diego, and Arizona, despite the fact that I was eight months pregnant. We weren't sure what to do with the kids while we went to the reunion, so we ended up inviting my parents with my sister's two kids, Mike and Brittany, and my brother, Bill, and sister-in-law, Jenny, with their daughter, Grace, who is the same age as Ella. Their son Porter stayed home with Jenny's parents.

After months of listening to the kids ask in eager anticipation when we were going, the day finally came on Wednesday, June 18th. We woke up early and when we asked a sleepy Ammon "Do you want to go to California?", he promptly said, "OK!", and jumped out of our bed. Of course there were similar responses from Isaac and Ella as well. We met up with the rest of the family in Lehi, not completely behind schedule, and after switching some kids around to make the trip more enjoyable, we headed out.

We made it all the way to Santequin when Isaac asked, "Are we there yet?" Hmm, how to explain to a five and a half year old that we weren't even close to being there yet. Time to put a movie in. With stops every couple of hours we still made really good time and arrived in Big Bear, California, where we were staying, right around dinner time. We have a time share there and because our time share in Anaheim was completely booked, we felt like it was the next best option. In hind sight it would have been better to just pay for a hotel in Anaheim, but oh well.

Thursday morning we all got ready and headed down the mountain to Disneyland (about a two hour trip). Everyone was pretty excited despite the long drive the day before, but it proved to be a little overwhelming for some of my kids. Ella refused to pose for a picture with the rest of the kids and this proved to be her attitude for the whole trip. Getting onto the tram from the parking lot, Ammon completely freaked out and caused quite a scene, but he calmed down a little bit once we were moving. My mom stayed back with us, but the rest of the family had gone ahead and were already in the park and riding rides by the time we got there. So a couple little bumps along the way, but we were still looking forward to an exciting and fun day. As we got into the park I thought, hmmm, we should all go to the bathroom before we start getting in lines that we won't want to get out of. Simple enough, right? Well . . . I went into the bathroom with my mom and Ella and after showing Ella to a stall I went to my own, not thinking much of it. I finished, washed my hands and told my mom to go ahead and go out, I just needed to check on Ella. Still not done.

"Ella, are you almost done?" "No." "OK, sweetie, hurry up so we can go ride some rides." No answer. A couple minutes later. "Ella, are you ok?" "No." "What's wrong?" "Nothing." "Ella, we need to hurry, there are people waiting." "I don't want to do anything!" Big sigh, oh this was going to be fun. "Ella, do you need some help?" "NO!" OK, maybe she was having a hard time, I'd give her a couple minutes. No change. "Ella, are you ok?" "Yes!" "Are you almost done?" "No!" This was getting ridiculous. After about fifteen minutes my mom came back in to see what was going on. I had no idea except that Ella was locked in the stall and just sitting on the toilet doing nothing. My mom tried. "Ella, you need to hurry so we can go ride the rides." No response. I told my mom to just go with everyone else and ride something, I'd wait with her. After twenty minutes more, I was still in the bathroom with Ella feeling like a total fool and basically in tears wondering if I was going to spend the entire day at Disneyland in the bathroom. Should I ask a custodian to break the lock, should I ask someone with small kids to have them crawl under the door and open it for me? I was in no position to do it myself or I would have. Everytime I tried to command, bribe, plead, and threaten Ella to open the door or at least tell me what was wrong I was given the same response, "I DON'T WANT TO DO ANYTHING!" That's our Ella, the sweet princess one minute, and the fiery dragon the next. Finally after 45 minutes, my mom came back with a new plan. She had found Grace and we sent her under the door. After Ella and Grace chatted for a minute (good grief!) Grace opened the door and I was able to get to Ella. Though I wanted to choke her, all I could do was cry and ask her what was wrong. I think it shocked her that I was crying and when I told her to get off the toilet she said that she needed to wipe. "So get some toilet paper." "I can't, it's stuck." I was ready to scream. If this was the reason she had sat there for 45 minutes I was going to shoot myself. Two minutes later she was washing her hands as if nothing had happened. Needing some time to calm down, I sent Ella with the group to ride the train and I sat in the shade and waited some more. I could hear Ammon screaming in protest as they got on the train and was glad that I had opted out of that adventure. What did I learn from this whole experience? Don't let Ella go into a bathroom stall by herself, and I didn't for the rest of the trip.

The rest of the day actually went pretty well. Glen's friends Mike and Sheila Parker came to the park and helped show us around and rode with us and the kids on the rides which was a big help. Our group had basically split up and so it was just us with our kids, my mom, and Mike and Sheila for most of the day. We hooked up a couple times to eat with everyone else and for a couple rides and then we all met up at the end of the day for the fireworks show by the castle. The highlights:

All the kids loving the Buzz Lightyear ride

Forgetting about the stomach dropping drops on Pirates of the Caribbean, but still enjoying it

Riding the Winnie the Pooh ride with the lights on because they were fixing it and we were able to take pictures inside.

Isaac getting a big thrill from Thunder Mountain, but being a little scared.

Isaac getting an even bigger thrill from Space Mountain, deemed his favorite ride ever!

Mine is no exception, but I love Wednesdays and Fridays. Most of my days have the normal routine things, get Isaac to school, clean house, do laundry, make meals, straighten, up etc. Added to that are my eleven piano students and the time I babysit as a trade so my house is quiet for my piano students. Don't get me wrong, I love to do it and I think I thrive on staying totally busy, but on Wednesdays and Fridays, I have a little more me time, a little more time to breath and enjoy life and a little more time to enjoy the most important things in my life, my kids.

I am continually amazed by them. They learn and grow so much everyday and I do try very hard to enjoy every moment, as hard as that is sometimes. Like right now as I'm trying to type and Ammon is trying to turn off the computer and pull my big comfy sweater off that I put on to cover the fact that I was taking Isaac to school in my pajamas. The cute part . . . the fact that he is talking to me and I only understand every fifth word, but he is very intense about what he is trying to tell me. Now here comes Ella who has been playing very quietly in her room for the past half hour and she has put on chapstick and play jewelry to look just like a princess. Yesterday Ella told me that if the bumblebees come in the house they will turn on the lights with their stingers. I did not know that. I will pick up Isaac in a couple hours and he will tell me all about the centers and the special movie they got to watch today at school and then he will start playing pretending to be a superhero or a cowboy or who knows what and will have a million things to tell me.

Yes, life as a mom is crazy and hectic, but I love Wednesdays when I can enjoy what being a mom is all about.

Tonsils and Birthdays

I was afraid I would start this blog and then get busy and forget about it, but I've found a few minutes, so here's an update on our life. Glen was getting strep throat and tonsillitis so frequently that the doctor finally referred him to an "Ear, nose, throat," doctor and the recommendation was to get rid of the tonsils. It's amazing how many people will say, "Aren't you supposed to get those out when you're little?" Yes, that would be the wise and easier thing to do, but Glen didn't. The surgery went quite well with very little bleeding. The doctor removed his tonsils, most of his uvula, and scraped the back of his tongue. Apparently, that will stop him from snoring. We're still waiting for the verdict on that. The after effects, weren't so great. Glen was in almost constant pain for two weeks. Luckily, he followed the doctor's directions to the letter and that helped immensely. He lived on a regiment of pain medication, smoothies, Popsicles and rest. For those thinking about this surgery, the first couple of days aren't the worst, it's the third and fourth day when the pain really starts and then it escalates until the tenth or eleventh day before finally tapering off. Even now it hurts Glen to yawn and the back of his tongue hurts a little. The doctor said Glen is doing great, but it will take three to four months before the area is completely healed. However, the fact that Glen shouldn't get strep throat again makes it all worth it.

May is one of our big birthday months. Ammon was born on the 9th and Ella on the 15th so we had a fun and slightly crazy time the past couple of weeks. Ammon turned 2 and his new favorite thing is cows. MOOO! He is nuts about cows and points them out everywhere he sees them. We had a family BBQ and my parents were great and made a cow cake for him. It was a lot of fun and he was excited about all his new toys.

Ella's Birthday was also a great success. She had a "flower" party with a few friends where they decorated little flower pots with flowers, leaves, and "diamonds". They filled them with treats and had a fun time playing with all the girly toys. It's always amazing how quickly the time passes and I can hardly believe that my baby boy is 2 and my little girl is 4.

Easter

Happy Easter!

Because our ward meets at 3:00 and ends at 6:00 (yes, we absolutely love meeting at this time), we haven't been able to go visit my family on Sunday's very much since the beginning of the year. We decided to go up to Layton to my parents house on Saturday and stay through Easter Sunday. The kids were just as excited to see Grandma and Grandpa as they were about the Easter bunny coming. Ammon was completely cuddly and ran to Grandma and Grandpa for frequent hugs. Ella was a chatterbox as usual and talked about anything and everything. Isaac had fun playing with his cousin Mike and just doing his own thing.

Glen and my Dad had the exciting and challenging task of helping the kids decorate eggs since my Mom, my sister, Abigail, and I ran to the store for some last minute things. When we got back they were still decorating, but it seemed like they kept everything under control pretty well. Not understanding the delicacy of eggs, Ammon did throw one into the dye and cracked it, but it turned out just fine.

The biggest challenge that night was Ammon, who refused to fall asleep until midnight. For some reason, ever since we painted his room he has not been sleeping well. But the next morning we arose to the excited sounds of kids discovering their Easter baskets full of treats. Obviously the highlight of the day for them were the treats and we were only slightly successful in rationing out the candy throughout the day. The highlight for me? Getting a ride in my Dad's Christmas present, his new Ferrari (a dream that he's had for as long as I can remember). With the weather being so nice he has finally been able to drive it around and boy is it quite the ride. I think the baby was still doing somersaults after we stopped from the extreme acceleration. It's a fun little car and I was glad to get a ride before I don't fit into it anymore.

Ella was absolutely adorable with curly hair and the boys were just as handsome as ever.

The car is so low, my Dad can't pull it into the driveway, it's quite interesting getting in and out being 20 weeks pregnant.

Decorating

We have been living in wonderful Eagle Mountain for almost four years now and when we built the house we were extremely excited about picking the carpeting, the counter tops, the cabinets, the tile, and the paint. We decided to go very light and neutral which I loved until I got the decorating bug. After a while, the "Aspen" colored walls started to seem a little too stark to me and I started contemplating what would look just right in our house. I thought about red in the great room, bright colors in the kids room. Then I changed my mind and thought dark blue in the great room and light pink or lavender in Ella's room. Over and over I contemplated what I wanted to do. Finally I found some pictures from magazines that were just right and I convinced Glen to spend his much needed vacation from work, painting. (Isn't he a great husband?)

I also convinced my younger brother Doug to help out since surely he had nothing better to do and wouldn't he like to spend some more time with his completely cute niece and nephew's? Luckily he agreed and was a great help. As with most projects, this is still a work in progress and there is still a lot to be done, (curtains, wall decor, new flooring, etc.). We have finally decided what to do in the two bathrooms and Master bedroom and unfortunately that will have to be done as Glen has a few hours here and there free from work. But for now I am completely excited and pleased with how the paint in the great room and the kids room's turned out.

I'll keep you updated for when it's all done and all those interested will just have to come out for a tour, it's even better in person. But for all of you who are thinking of re-decorating, I realized a few things during this process. Here's my list of tips:

1. Pick a good paint - We went to Jone's Paint and Glass where they were extremely helpful. We went with Devoe Paint that went on smooth and it looks great. Plus, price wise, it was a great deal.

2. Look at the paint color you've chosen before you leave the paint store. Paint swatches can be deceiving. The rest of the great room and the hall is a nice tan, but only because I took it back and had it re-tinted. If I would have been paying attention, I would have realized that the first color I picked had a distinct undertone of lilac and boy did it come out on the wall! The walls looked great for Easter, but it was not the look I was going for. If you can't tell, the rest of the great room (Kitchen and Dining Room) is a luscious chocolate brown. It's a great accent color and I LOVE it! The curtains and other decor will have an aqua blue in it that will really pop out against the brown.

3. Realize you can fix things. I had wanted to do a faux sponge or "towel" effect in Ella's room, but once Glen started it, I realized it was not what I had hoped it would be. So he painted over it and we decided to add the dark pink stripe which worked great.

4. Stripes are not that hard. OK, yes, they are time consuming, but here is a great tip if you want to do stripes and it works really well. Buy clear paintable caulking. Measure carefully and put up your tape. Bead the caulking all along the tape, then with your finger push it into the tape, smoothing it out and taking off the extra as you go. It should leave only a thin film. Paint your stripe and let it dry for about 30 minutes, then while it is still a little tacky, carefully pull the tape off at an angle. You will have a straight line that will knock your socks off, just check out the boys room!

I may be a little crazy, but I am loving this decorating process and I get excited every time I see something else that will work with what we've already started. The house already feels warmer and it makes me smile every time I walk into the house.

Our Pachycephalosaurus

At 18 months Isaac started saying dinosaur names and was so incredibly fascinated with them, that it was pretty much all he ever talked about. By two years old he could name at least 20 dinosaur names and identify them. I started to think, "Wow, my son is a genius!" He was and is quite smart, but I realized that most kids who develop some kind of obsession are just that way. They are little sponges that absorb everything they hear about their favorite subject and then they love to talk about it. The obsession over dinosaurs led to a new obsession with superheroes, but we haven't left the realm of dinosaurs completely. Ammon has now become our favorite pachycephalosaurus.

Let me explain. A pachycephalosaurus is a dinosaur with a ring around it's head that looks like a wreath of rocks. In the center of this ring on the top of the dinosaur's head is what can only be described as a round bald crown. This bald area comes in handy for battle because the main defense for the pachycephalosaurus is butting it's head into those who are attacking it.

While Ammon can be a very sweet, lovable little guy, he is also extremely intense when it comes to getting some one's attention and his method of choice is running head first into his victim. The amazing thing is how little it seems to affect him. He can literally knock a grown adult off their feet by barrelling into their leg at full speed and he isn't affected by it at all. Beware if you are sitting at a chair and he comes running. I keep trying to explain to him that he's head butting his baby brother, but I think he's trying to get an early start on his big brother duties. So just beware, if this unsuspecting little toddler puts his head down and starts to rev-up, you might want to move.

My Very First Blog

This is quite exciting. Okay, so actually I'm really nervous that I'm putting my thoughts and feelings and experiences out there for others to read, but feeling a little uncomfortable makes life exciting. Plus, the bigger the family grows and the more friends I feel I need to keep in contact with, the harder it gets to actually do that so at least those who want to can check in with us on occasion and see just how crazy our lives are. Those professional and well established bloggers, please be patient with me as I am completely new to this.
